Economic Review of Afghanistan’s southern provinces
In 2009, for USAID, we prepared an economic review of Afghanistan’s southern provinces – Helmand, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Zabul, Nimroz and Daikundi. The review examined the main opportunities and constraints facing the regional economy and in particular the priorities for investment in the power, roads and irrigation infrastructure.
Our involvement included field work across the south and in Kabul, meeting with regional and national government, local business people, aid agencies, NGOs and military commanders in Regional Command-South. The output from our analysis has helped identify both development and military priorities and has provided the economic context and justification for new infrastructure investment.
